The sesquiterpene hydrocarbon Germacrene has five isomers- Germacrene-A, B, C, D and E. It is also considered to be one of the most important molecules of Germacrene. The molecular formula of Germacrene-D is C 15 H 24.
The major components were identified as germacrene D and limonene. The EO showed antibacterial activity against the important human pathogenic Gram-positive bacterium, S. aureus, with an MIC of 80 ?g/mL. Similar activity was also observed with the EOs of Baccharis latifolia Pers. and Baccharis prunifolia H. B. & K. [31].

Sugar apple flesh comprises terpenes such as ?-pinene, ?-pinene, linalool, germacrene – D and spathulenol esters such as butylbutanoate and methyllinolenate along with benzyl alcohol and two oxygenated sesquiterpenes as the major volatiles when extracted with dichloromethane and n-pentane (1:1) (Shashirekha et al.
2008).Most atemoyas produce a better odour than sugar.
The sesquiterpene Germacrene D (GD ) activates a major type of olfactory receptor neuron on the antennae of the heliothine moths. In Heliothis virescens females, 80% of the recordings have shown activity of one neuron type responding with high sensitivity and selectivity to GD.
Mutagenesis of this motif to (303)DDTYD gave rise to an enzyme that fully retained (+)- germacrene D synthase activity . The converse mutation in Sc19 (D303N) resulted in a less efficient but functional enzyme. Mutagenesis of position 303 to glutamate in both enzymes resulted in loss of activity .
Germacrene D Biological Activity . Description: Germacrene D is isolated from Bursera species. Germacrene D has antibacterial and antifungal activities and can be used as an adjuvant agent in the application of aminoglycosides and azoles[1]. Related Catalog:
